We would love to introduce you to Habtanua! Habtanua is a 40 year old HIV positive woman who was selected to take part in Engage Now Africa’s income generating activity (IGA) for women in Debrezait, Ethiopia. Habtanua is a single mother with two sons ages 6 and 12 years old. Prior to the program, she struggled to feed her sons and pay their school tuition as a day laborer. She said “I had interest to have the skills of a business woman in order to generate income and support my family. Two years ago, my friends told me how to get organized and start a small business on a cattle farm which is run by ENA. Immediately I went to the government office and applied by explaining my life history that I am HIV/AIDS carrier, I have no income to assist my children and that I am poor. I applied that I [could] have the chance to be a part of the program, so that I can help my two little children and finally I was accepted in the program!” Habtanua used to struggle to feed her children and to send them to school, but now she says she is able to easily feed her family and pay for their school fees. Furthermore, Habtanua said that the business training classes provided by ENA gave her valuable business skills. Habtamua is now a different person than she was before joining ENA’S IGA project. She says that now her self-steam and moral has grown and she is confident that she will be an even more successful business woman in a few short years. Each recipient is given their own cow to care for and sell for profit. ENA is currently on their third round of the successful business model and has received recognition and awards from the local and national government.
